1. Shanghai University of Sport

Shanghai University of Sport (SUS), founded in 1952, is the first university of its kind in New China and one of the earliest sport universities in our country to grant master's (1981) and doctoral degrees (1986). Recently, the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and the National Development and Reform Commission (NRDC) have jointly announced the list of universities and disciplines to be constructed into world-class universities and world-class disciplines (“Double First-Class Initiative”). SUS has been selected as one of the universities to be constructed into the world-class discipline in Sport Science.

Currently, SUS has more than 4000 full-time undergraduate students on campus, 1500 postgraduate students, and nearly 600 adult students for continuing study. Over sixty-five years of construction and development, SUS has established complete educational system covering bachelor, master and doctoral programs. SUS currently offers doctoral programs for first-level discipline of Sport Science, academic master programs of Sport Science, Psychology, Medical Technology (Rehabilitation Oriented) and Journalism as well as professional master programs of Sport, Art, Journalism and Public Administration.

SUS adheres to the guiding principle of “attaching equal importance to characteristics and quality as well as mutually reinforcing discipline construction and talent cultivation”, and takes   initiatives to act to the development of times as well as to the national (regional) development strategies. We have accumulated advantages in physical education and sports training, health rehabilitation, sport journalism, sports industry economy, sports public administration and art (sports-oriented). At present, we have built 6 key laboratories (base) at the provincial and ministerial level, including the MOE key laboratory of sports and fitness technology, the key research base of sports social science, key laboratory of diagnosis and analysis of techniques and tactics and the key laboratory of development and guarantee of human athletic performance. With approval from the State Council, the second national doping control laboratory is under construction by the General Administration of Sport and Shanghai Municipal Government.

As one of the pilot institutions with the independent recruitment qualification for the Chinese Government Scholarship, SUS has established cooperative relationship with more than 80 universities and institutions in 30 countries and regions with more than 1000 overseas students on campus from more than 60 countries including the United States, France, Germany, Japan and Korea. We have established the China Table Tennis College Europe, the IHF Handball Academy and the Special Training Certification Center of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Currently, China Table Tennis College has been named the highest college-level training base of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

So far, we have won 5 Olympic gold medals, 1 Olympic silver medal, 5 Olympic bronze medals, 28 World Championships gold medals, 39 Gold medals at the Asian Games and the Asian Championships; we have 3 students breaking the world records for 3 times and 2 students breaking the Asian records for 12 times. Besides, we have also won 18 gold medals at the National Games on behalf of Shanghai.

Taking a future perspective, SUS aims to stand as a characteristic application-oriented research university, respond to the strategy of invigorating China through higher education and sport, practice the educational principle of “developing both physically and mentally with enhancement both in liberal arts and science, and with the mutual enhancement of morality and techniques to order to cultivate all-round talents for the society”, take reform and innovation as the impetus and quality improvement as the core, so as to deepen the connotation construction and make great efforts to establish a world-class sport university.
