1. Shanghai University of Sport
Shanghai University of Sport (SUS), founded in 1952, isthe first university of its kind in New China and one of the earliest sport universities in our country to grant master's (1981) and doctoral degrees(1986). Recently, the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Finance(MOF) and the National Development and Reform Commission (NRDC) have jointly announced the list of universities and disciplines to be constructed into world-class universities and world-class disciplines (“Double First-Class Initiative”). SUShas been selected as one of the universities to be constructed into theworld-class discipline in Sport Science.
Currently,SUS has more than 4000 full-time undergraduate students on campus, 1500 postgraduate students, and nearly
600 adult students for continuing study. Over sixty-five years of construction and development, SUS has established complete educational system covering bachelor, master and doctoral programs. SUScurrently offers doctoral programs for first-level discipline of Sport Science,academic master programs of Sport Science, Psychology, Medical Technology(Rehabilitation Oriented) and Journalism as well as professional masterprograms of Sport, Art, Journalism and Public Administration.
SUS adheres to the guiding principle of“attaching equal importance to characteristics and quality as well as mutually reinforcing discipline construction and talent cultivation”, and takes initiatives to act to the development oftimes as well as to the national (regional) development strategies. We have accumulated advantages in physical education and sports training, health rehabilitation,sport journalism, sports industry economy, sports public administration and art(sports-oriented). At present, we have built 6 key laboratories (base) at the provincial andministerial level, including the MOE key laboratory of sports and fitness technology, the key research base ofsportssocialscience, key laboratory of diagnosisandanalysisoftechniques andtacticsand the key laboratory of development and guarantee of human athletic performance. With approval from the State Council, the second national doping control laboratory is under construction by the General Administration of Sport and Shanghai Municipal Government.
As one of the pilot institutions with the independent recruitment qualification for the Chinese Government Scholarship, SUS has established cooperative relationship with more than 80 universities and institutions in 30countries and regions with more than 1000 overseas students on campus from more than 60 countries including the United States, France, Germany, Japan andKorea. We have established the China Table Tennis College Europe, the IHF Handball Academy and the Special Training CertificationCenter of the International Association ofAthletics Federations (IAAF). Currently, China Table Tennis College has beennamed the highest college-level training base of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
So far, wehave won 5 Olympic gold medals, 1 Olympic silver medal, 5 Olympic bronze medals, 28 World Championships gold medals, 39 Gold medals at the Asian Gamesand the Asian Championships; we have 3 students breaking the world records for 3 times and 2 students breaking the Asian records for 12 times. Besides, wehave also won 18 gold medals at the National Games on behalf of Shanghai.
Taking afuture perspective, SUS aims to stand as a characteristic application-oriented research university, respond to the strategy of invigorating China through higher education and sport, practice the educational principle of “developingboth physically and mentally with enhancement both in liberal arts and science,and with the mutual enhancement of morality and techniques to order tocultivate all-round talents for the society”, take reform and innovation as theimpetus and quality improvement as the core, so as to deepen the connotation construction and make great efforts to establish a world-class sport university.
2. Program Overview
Shanghai Summer School (3S), launched by ShanghaiMunicipal Education Commission, serves as one of the windows for international cooperation and exchanges in terms of education in Shanghai. It aims at settingup a platform for exchanges in education and humanities between Shanghai andthe rest of the world with different languages and cultures as well as attracting more excellent foreign students to study in Shanghai, learn Chinese languageand even experience Chinese Culture.
Shanghai Summer School: Chinese Martial Arts Programis initiated by Shanghai University ofSport and it usually lasts for four weeks from July to August every year.
Chinese Martial Arts Programprovides a vibrant academic and cultural experience forparticipants. SUS faculty and staff members and students will collaborativelycontribute to the program. The program is structured with the followingcomponents:
Martial arts courses (theoretical classesand workshops)
Chinese language courses
Chinese cultural enrichment activities
Excursions and local visits
Martial arts courses
Different styles of Chinese Martial arts courses are setup, such as Taiji Quan, Shaolin Quan, Shaolin Stick (Shaolin gun), Mulan Jian,etc., as well as lectures about Chinese Wushu History and Culture.
Chinese language courses
To offer basic Chinese language courses, to help participantsto know basic Chinese language.
Chinese cultural enrichmentactivities
Chinese cultural enrichment activities are an importantway for participants to better understand Chinese culture.
Throughout theprogram, participants will engage in the following activities:
Excursions and localvisits
With local visits, participant will have chance to visitsome museums, such as Chinese Wushu Museum, Chinese Medicine Museum, Shanghai Drama Museum, etc, as well as tourist spots, such as the Bund, Yuyuan Garden,Chenghuang Temple, Nanjing Road, etc. By offering students Chinese traditional sports and arts, and language classes, we hope overseas’ people, especially thesports lovers, will know more about China and Chinese traditional culture.
3. Program Administration
Participants will be housed in double-rooms at overseas students’ apartment on campus. Rooms are newly furnished and have a private bathroom and laundry facilities. Classrooms and training field for the program arelocated on campus so participants will be able to walk from their residence totheir classes and workshops.
Transportation: Transportation to and from the airportwill be pre-arranged and participants will be met at the airport upon arrival intoShanghai. For local transportation around campus and the city, participantswill have access to the public transportation system. For local transport to programmed events, a bus will be chartered by SUS.
Registration for Temporary Residence in Shanghai:Every non-Chinese student is required toregister with-in 24 hours upon their arrival in Shanghai at the counter in Room106 on the ground floor of International Students Apartment. Drop in with your original passport.
